Chapter I | Sous Le Velours, Le Fer
The first chapter of noisé reading room takes inspiration from a phrase from when noisé portrayed the legendary gallerist Marian Goodman, who was once described as:
“une main de fer dans un gant de velours (an iron hand in a velvet glove)”.
The reading framework of the first chapter unfolds from here, bringing together works by nearly one hundred women artists, writers, and thinkers, spanning both canonical and experimental practices. Artists such as Louise Bourgeois, Roni Horn, Agnes Martin, and Sophie Calle, whose work continues to shape how we see the world, are presented alongside key texts in feminist thought, fiction, poetry, essays, and biography.
Photography appears as another form of reading within the space. Works by four women artists—Benedict Brink, Lena C. Emery, Rita Lino, and Milena Villalón—enter through the intimacy of personal life, inviting us into their ways of seeing and remembering the world.
There are no slogans here, no didactic structures. Only the women we admire, and how they read and see the world.
